Stuccio’s Pizzeria

History

Stuccio’s famous pizza began in the Grotto Restaurant at Sunset-Harvey’s Lake. In the summer of 1948, Joseph Stuccio, an Italian immigrant, opened the Grotto. His pizza recipe brought from Italy became an instant success. Mr. Stuccio’s idea to showcase the preparation and baking of his pizza as the public watched was a novel concept that attracted customers from the entire Wyoming Valley. The thin crust, fresh cheese, and special homemade tomato sauce were the hallmarks of Stuccio’s Pizza. With his immediate success, Mr. Stuccio, wife Margaret and his five children soon opened additional shops at Sandy Beach-Harvey’s Lake, Wilkes-Barre, Nanticoke and Berwick. Over the past 60 years, the product has been continuously improved to the point that Stuccio’s Pizza is now the standard by which all pizza is measured. However, as the work load increased, and the children went off to college (two became medical doctors and one a dentist) the pizza shops were sold off and only one remains. Stuccio’s Pizzeria in Berwick, operated by daughter Kay, a well-known community leader, along with her son Joe, is the last remaining, going strong and still serving that delicious, original recipe Stuccio’s Pizza!
